What's the Difference Between Plantation Blinds and Traditional Blinds?

Plantation blinds are an ideal way to incorporate the style of plantation shutters while sticking to a budget.

But what makes them stand out from traditional blinds, like horizontal blinds or mini blinds? Or plantation shutters?

Mini Blinds in a bathroom

Plantation Blinds vs. Mini Blinds

When you hear the word blinds, you might picture mini blinds. This popular, budget-friendly window treatment often has one-inch aluminum slats.

Mini blinds are great for busy spaces with a lot of foot traffic, since they’re easy to maintain. And cordless blinds styles from Hunter Douglas are even easier to raise.

Plantation shutters

Plantation Blinds vs. Plantation Shutters

Plantation blinds are similar to plantation shutters but have several unique features.

1. Slat Size

Plantation blinds have larger slats than regular blinds, typically as large as 2.5 inches. But their slats are smaller than plantation shutter louvers, which are as big as 4.5 inches.

2. Installation Area

Plantation blinds are mounted at the top of windows, while plantation shutters are mounted inside the window opening.

3. Operating System

Many plantation blinds lower with a cord, but some include a cordless lift system, like our custom blinds from Hunter Douglas.

Customize Your Blinds

Our blinds are available in a selection of slat widths, finishes and materials. Best-selling materials include faux wood and wood blinds.

Not sure which material you should select? Real wood blinds are best for rooms with little humidity, such as bedrooms or living spaces. Polymer blinds are moisture resistant, making them a good option for kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms.

Whichever style you want, you’ll have window treatments with greater light control.
